PARKSIDE

Explore Animal Kingdom

For those of you new to the area, Disney's Animal Kingdom is the newest theme park to the collection (although it was opened in 1999). As you enter the park, you are overwhelmed with beautiful foliage housing many different animals. Symbolically named 'Oasis', this area of the park showcases some animals in their somewhat natural habitat and their interactions together. As you venture further into the park and over the bridge, the tree of life is sure to catch your eye. Standing 145 feet in the air and 50 feet wide, this tree is covered in sculptures of animals. The tree of life is covered with over 100,000 leaves, all 1 foot in length! Thats over 19 miles of leaves! While the tree of life steals the show in Discovery Cove, there is a great 3-D film It's Tough to Be a Bug, which is based off Disney Pixar's "A Bug's Life" and plays underneath the tree of life.

To the immediate left is Camp Minnie-Mickey boasting a puppet show based on "The Lion King," and this is also where many of the characters can be seen in
costume. On the other side of the tree of life is DinoLand U.S.A.. Here you will find a multitude of rides, shows, and games. The main attraction Dinosaur takes you on a bumpy journey back to the Cretaceous where you just barely escape the asteroid that made dinosaurs extinct. If rides just aren't your cup of tea, you'll also find the musical version of Finding Nemo here.

Traveling next to Asia, the first step in Mt. Everest. This high speed roller coaster whips you over the mountain as you try to avoid the famed Yeti. Cutting through the dark tunnels of the mountain forwards and backwards is sure to get your heart beating. Traveling further into Asia you will find the Flights of Wonder. Here you can see numerous exotic birds perform amazing tricks including everything from a pocket picking crow, to a signing parrot.

I saved Africa for last not only because it is the last stop on our tour, but it is also my favorite area in the park. Africa is home to both my favorite restaurant and ride. If you plan on going to Animal Kingdom and would like to eat at the Tusker House, be sure to make a reservation days in advance. This is the most popular restaurant in the theme park as it is the only one that features characters as you dine. Mickey, Donald, and Daisy all make the rounds while you indulge in a wonderful buffet. After your giant meal, you probably won't want to walk very much, so make the short journey to Kilimanjaro Safaris. This amazing safari ride gives you the feeling of actually being on safari in Africa. This preserve is home to some common animals such as elephants, hippos, giraffes, and lions. It is also home to some less common animals such as Bongos, Kudus, and Scimitar-horned Oryx.

I greatly encourage all of you to enjoy Disney's Animal Kingdom at least once and experience the majestic ora it provides. I have included my photos from the safari so you can enjoy so of the animals too.
